If you are a soon-to-be or recent high school graduate who is contemplating what career you will pursue after high school, perhaps you should look into becoming an electrician or electronics technician. A four-year degree is not needed for this career. In fact, completing an electrical program takes two years or less. While not mandatory for a job in the electrical and electronics repair and Installation field, a post-secondary education program will teach you everything you need to know to succeed in your career. It will also make you more competitive for employment.
You can get an electrical certificate at a technical or trade school if you choose. This program will teach students the knowledge, skills, and safety requirements needed to be successful in their careers.
A slightly better option is to earn your Associate’s degree, generally from a community college. This process takes a little longer, approximately two years, but you will have some advantages by having your two-year degree. Besides the electrical and electronics repair and installation curriculum offered in your Associate’s degree program, you will be required to take math, English, computer skills, and other courses that will help you to succeed in aspects of your career besides technical work. Being a well-rounded applicant will make you even more competitive for jobs.
It has become necessary for electrical and electronics worker to have post-secondary education in order to compete for jobs in today’s market. It may be possible for you to gain employment on the strength of your high school vocational program, or even as a complete beginner with the aptitude to learn on the job, a post-secondary certificate or Associate’s degree will allow you to qualify for better jobs quickly. You will also experience more opportunities for advancement.
If you are thinking about entering an electrical program, evaluate yourself for your ability to perform well in an electrical or electronics repair and installation career. You should be healthy and fit, as the nature of the job is physical and, at times, strenuous. You may be required to lift heavy equipment. You will also spend hours on your feet, on ladders, or in a kneeling or crouching position in order to perform your varied duties. Finally, you should have healthy vision or corrected vision, as well as normal color perception, in order to work with safety and accuracy and to identify colored wiring and electrical components.
Professional certification is recommended, and often required by employers, especially if you are in the process of finding a job, acquiring professional certification can make you a more desirable candidate. You have several options for professional certification requiring your completion of a post-secondary Electrical program. Two examples are the Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) and The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians. You should have good test-taking skills in order to successfully complete exams related to your required competencies.
Electrical and electronics workers have many choices within the field, from factory equipment installation and repair to working in a power plant. Your post-secondary program will allow you to explore various areas of your field, in order to find a career that is of interest to you.
Though it may be possible to find entry-level employment as an inexperienced electrical or electronics worker willing to learn on the job, or as a high school graduate from vocational online certificate programs, you will have an easier time finding a job with post-secondary training. The electrical and electronics field is more competitive now than ever, and a certificate or Associate’s degree will qualify you for better jobs and quicker advancement in your field.
